Sore throat with inflamed tonsils

Tonsils enlarge when immune tissue reacts to irritation or infection. A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, or glandular fever may cause swollen tonsils alongside congestion, cough, tiredness, or body aches. Strep throat can cause prominent pain with swallowing and tender neck glands. Acid reflux and allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat but are less likely to make the tonsils markedly swollen. White patches or redness do not by themselves prove a bacterial infection, and inflamed tonsils do not identify one cause without the rest of the examination.

Sip fluids often and select soft foods until swallowing is easier. Warm drinks, cool fluids, or a salt-water gargle may provide relief. Rest and avoid smoke, vaping, and sharing utensils while symptoms are active. Take pain medicine only according to the label and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have another illness, or take regular medicines. Do not scrape patches from the tonsils or take antibiotics left from an earlier illness.

Seek urgent care if you cannot swallow saliva, have noisy or difficult breathing, rapidly worsening swelling, a muffled voice, or severe one-sided pain that makes opening your mouth difficult. Arrange a medical review when symptoms are severe, last longer than expected, recur, or make drinking difficult. A clinician can check hydration, inspect the tonsils, and decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate.
