Sore throat, headache and fatigue: what to know

Short answer
A sore throat with headache and fatigue often occurs during a viral illness, but the pattern and severity of symptoms determine whether medical assessment is needed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How these symptoms fit together
Common cold, influenza and COVID-19 can cause throat inflammation alongside headache and tiredness. Glandular fever may bring pronounced fatigue, swollen glands and a sore throat. Tonsillitis or strep throat can cause throat pain and headache, with fever or painful swallowing in some people. Allergic rhinitis may cause throat irritation and a headache from congestion, although marked fatigue suggests looking at the wider picture. Symptoms overlap, so no single feature confirms a diagnosis.
Write down when the symptoms began, how quickly they changed, whether fever is present, and whether you have cough, congestion, swollen glands, rash, nausea or abdominal discomfort. This gives a clinician a clearer pattern.
What to do while you recover
Rest, drink fluids regularly and choose easy-to-swallow foods. Reduce demanding activity while fatigue is strong, and avoid sharing cups or close contact if an infection is possible. Warm drinks or a suitable gargle may soothe the throat. A pharmacist can advise on pain or fever relief that fits your age, pregnancy status, medicines and health conditions. Do not return to strenuous exercise while you feel acutely unwell.
When to seek help
Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids or saliva, severe dehydration, confusion, a stiff neck with severe headache, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange a medical review if fatigue is profound, symptoms are not improving, fever persists, swallowing becomes increasingly painful, or you develop a rash or marked neck swelling. Seek advice sooner if you have a weakened immune system.
