Sore throat for a month: what to know

A throat can remain irritated after a viral illness, from post-nasal drip linked with allergic rhinitis, or from dry air, smoke, vaping and frequent voice use. Acid reflux may cause soreness, coughing, throat clearing or hoarseness, especially after meals or when lying down. Strep throat and tonsillitis may cause more focused pain, swollen tonsils or tender glands, although symptoms overlap.

A month of symptoms does not point to one diagnosis. A clinician may examine your throat and neck, ask about exposures and medicines, and decide whether a swab or referral is appropriate.

Keep a brief symptom record, including hoarseness, cough, reflux sensations, nasal symptoms and swallowing changes. Drink regularly, rest your voice, avoid smoking and vaping, and choose foods that do not scrape or sting. Use any pain medicine only as directed and check with a pharmacist when other medicines or health conditions could affect your choice.

Arrange a prompt appointment for a sore throat lasting a month, particularly with one-sided pain, a neck lump, persistent hoarseness, ear pain, bleeding, unexplained weight change or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, drooling or rapidly worsening swelling.
