Sore throat and dizziness: what to know

A viral illness such as a Common Cold, Influenza, or COVID-19 can leave you light-headed, especially when you are eating and drinking less. Fever, sweating, vomiting, or diarrhoea can increase fluid loss. Throat inflammation may also occur with Tonsillitis, Strep Throat, or Glandular Fever. Allergic Rhinitis and Acid Reflux can irritate the throat, although they do not explain every episode of dizziness. Dizziness may mean a spinning sensation, unsteadiness, or feeling faint, so describe the exact feeling and when it occurs.

A sore throat is a common presentation of several conditions, and its presence does not identify one cause by itself. A clinician may consider your breathing, hydration, pulse, blood pressure, ears, throat appearance, and other symptoms.

Rest, take small frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Rise slowly from bed or a chair, and avoid driving, heights, or machinery while dizzy. Follow the label for any pain medicine and check with a pharmacist if you have a long-term condition, take other medicines, or are pregnant. Keep track of urine becoming unusually dark, reduced drinking, worsening throat pain, and whether dizziness follows standing.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, fainting, new confusion, severe weakness, a stiff neck, a sudden severe headache, chest pain, or one-sided neurological changes. Arrange prompt medical review if you cannot keep fluids down, feel faint repeatedly, have marked dehydration, or symptoms are worsening rather than settling. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a throat examination or testing is appropriate.

Ask: Could dehydration, an infection, medication, or an inner-ear problem explain the dizziness? Do I need a throat swab or other examination? Which fluids and pain-relief options suit my health conditions? What change should prompt urgent review?
