Sore throat complications: what to know

A sore throat often accompanies a viral illness such as the Common Cold or Influenza and settles with supportive care. Bacterial Strep Throat or Tonsillitis can cause more marked swelling and pain. A collection of infected fluid beside a tonsil may cause severe one-sided pain, a muffled voice, drooling, or difficulty opening the mouth. Infection spreading deeper into the neck is uncommon but can affect swallowing or breathing. Glandular Fever may bring pronounced tiredness and swollen glands, while Acid Reflux can repeatedly irritate the throat without an infection.

Sip fluids often and choose soft, cool foods if swallowing hurts. Rest your voice and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Follow the label for any suitable pain relief, checking with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have another illness, or take regular medicines. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine; treatment depends on the cause and an examination may be needed.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, blue or grey lips, or rapidly increasing swelling. Arrange urgent medical review for severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, inability to open the mouth normally, signs of dehydration, or symptoms that are getting worse rather than easing. A persistent or repeatedly returning sore throat also deserves a clinician's assessment.
