Sore throat and cough: what to know

A cough can inflame the throat, while mucus draining from the nose can trigger both coughing and scratchiness. A Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19 may present with these symptoms. Tonsillitis or Strep Throat can also cause throat pain, especially when swallowing; a cough makes strep less typical, so an examination may help. Acid Reflux and Allergic Rhinitis can cause a recurring cough without an infection. Glandular Fever may be considered when marked tiredness or swollen neck glands accompany the throat problem.

Rest, drink fluids regularly and choose warm or cool drinks according to comfort. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe an adult throat; avoid swallowing the mixture. Honey in a warm drink can calm a cough for adults and children over one year. Avoid smoke and other irritants, and use a humidified room if dry air worsens symptoms. A pharmacist can help you choose a suitable pain reliever or cough product after checking age, pregnancy, allergies and other medicines. Antibiotics do not treat viral infections.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, new confusion, severe dehydration, chest pain or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange medical assessment if the throat pain is severe, symptoms keep returning, a high temperature persists, or you have a weakened immune system. A clinician may examine the throat, ears and chest and decide whether testing is useful.
