Sore lower back after deadlifts: what to do

Short answer
Sore lower back after deadlifts calls for a temporary training adjustment, comfortable movement and review of technique before loading again.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First adjustment
- Pause heavy deadlifts and keep comfortable walking.
- Return cue
- Resume loading only when movement is controlled and symptoms are settling.
What may be happening
Deadlifts challenge the hips, trunk and back muscles. Soreness that develops after training and stays local may reflect fatigue or a muscle strain, especially after a heavier session or a change in volume. Sudden sharp pain, pain into the leg, tingling or weakness deserves a different assessment because joints, discs or nerves may be involved. Lumbar spondylosis can be considered when back symptoms are recurrent, but soreness after one lifting session does not establish it.
How to modify training
Stop the set if form changes or pain becomes sharp. For now, choose easy walking and movements that do not increase symptoms; avoid testing the back with another heavy lift. When daily movement is comfortable, return with a lighter load, a shorter range if needed and deliberate bracing. A coach or physiotherapist can check hip hinge mechanics, bar path, breathing and recovery habits. Progress only when the current level feels controlled during and after training.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain is severe, keeps worsening, limits walking or does not begin settling after training is reduced. Seek urgent help for leg weakness, numbness around the groin, or new loss of bladder or bowel control. Medical review is also appropriate after a fall or other significant injury, or when pain repeatedly returns with ordinary lifting.
Questions for an assessment
Does the pattern fit muscle soreness or a spine-related problem? Which deadlift variation and range are appropriate during recovery? Can you review my hip mobility, bracing and return-to-load plan?

Questions people ask
Should I deadlift through lower-back soreness?
Do not push through sharp or escalating pain. Reduce the load or pause the lift and resume gradually after comfortable movement returns.
Could deadlifts damage my spine?
Soreness does not by itself show structural damage. Technique, load, fatigue and individual factors all affect symptoms, so persistent or radiating pain needs assessment.
