Sore inside nose that will not heal: what to know

The delicate nasal lining can be repeatedly disturbed by dry air, rubbing, picking, a piercing, or frequent use of some sprays. A crusted tender area may follow minor trauma or local infection. A persistent spot can also need assessment for Basal Cell Carcinoma or Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Most causes are not identified from symptoms alone, so the duration and appearance guide the examination.

Leave the crust in place, avoid inserting cotton buds or fingers, and do not use household antiseptics or leftover medication. Keep a note of when it began, whether it bleeds, and any change in size or colour. Book a clinician visit for direct inspection; they can advise on suitable moisture care and whether further testing is needed.

Seek prompt review for repeated bleeding, increasing pain, a growing or firm area, persistent crusting, one-sided blockage, or a sore that returns after seeming to settle. Get urgent help for bleeding that will not stop with gentle pressure, marked swelling, fever, or difficulty breathing.

Ask whether the sore is on the lining or the outer skin, what may be irritating it, which treatment is safe inside the nose, and whether a specialist assessment is appropriate.
