How to soothe sunburn

Short answer
To soothe sunburn, leave the sun, cool the skin with water or a damp cloth, moisturise gently, drink fluids, and seek care for extensive blistering or severe symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cool gently
- Use cool water or a damp cloth, not direct ice.
- Protect
- Stay out of further sun while healing.
How sunburn behaves
Sunburn commonly causes tender skin redness, warmth, tightness, and later peeling. More intense injury can produce Skin Blisters. Peeling is the skin shedding damaged surface cells; pulling at flakes can expose sensitive skin and increase irritation. Repeated ultraviolet exposure contributes to Sun-Damaged Skin, so a burn is also a reason to improve daily sun protection.
Comfort and protection
Take a cool shower or place a cool, damp cloth over the area, then pat dry. Apply an uncomplicated moisturiser or Emollient Therapy while the skin is slightly damp, provided it does not sting. Wear loose clothing, avoid further sun, and do not break blisters or use ice directly. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a medicine is suitable; do not apply Topical Corticosteroids without appropriate guidance.
Warning signs
Get urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, severe dehydration, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt assessment for widespread blistering, severe swelling, intense pain, fever, pus, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Extra care is sensible for burns involving the eyes, face, hands, or genitals, and for babies or young children.
Questions to ask
How extensive is the burn? Which moisturiser is suitable for this skin? How should I protect the area while it heals? Do the blisters or symptoms need examination?

Questions people ask
Should I peel sunburned skin?
No. Let loose skin shed on its own and moisturise gently if the product does not sting.
Can I pop sunburn blisters?
No. Intact blisters help protect the injured surface; ask a clinician how to manage large or painful ones.
