How to soothe strep throat

Short answer
To soothe strep throat, drink fluids, rest, use suitable pain relief, and arrange clinical assessment because antibiotics may be needed after diagnosis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Recognising the infection
Strep throat is an infection caused by streptococcal bacteria. It can present with a sudden sore throat, pain when swallowing, fever, red or swollen tonsils and swollen glands in the neck. Some people develop tiny spots on the roof of the mouth or a rash. Cough, runny nose and hoarseness are more often associated with viral throat infections, although symptoms can overlap.
A sore throat is a presentation of strep throat, but most sore throats are not automatically strep. A GP consultation can help decide whether an examination or test is appropriate.
Relieving pain while you recover
Rest and drink often, choosing warm or cool fluids according to what feels comfortable. Soft foods can reduce scraping when swallowing. Avoid smoke and give your voice a break. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend pain relief based on your age, health conditions and other medicines; follow the label or prescription directions.
If a clinician prescribes antibiotic treatment, take it exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Do not share antibiotics or use leftovers. Stay home from close contact until your clinician says it is reasonable to return, especially while fever or significant symptoms continue.
When to get help quickly
Arrange assessment for severe throat pain, fever with swollen glands, a spreading rash, repeated episodes or symptoms that are not improving. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, a muffled voice, one-sided throat swelling, confusion or signs of dehydration. Prompt treatment can be important when bacterial infection is suspected.
Questions for your appointment
Ask whether your symptoms need testing, whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate, how to manage pain with your current medicines, and when you can safely return to work, school or close contact.

Questions people ask
Can strep throat improve with home care alone?
Comfort measures can ease symptoms, but suspected strep throat should be assessed because some people need antibiotic treatment.
Can I use leftover antibiotics?
No. The medicine may be unsuitable, and the correct treatment depends on clinical assessment and instructions from a prescriber.
