What should you know about sonographic core biopsy?

Ultrasound helps the clinician see the area in real time and choose a precise path. After cleaning the skin, local anaesthetic is usually given so the area becomes numb. A small incision may be made, and the spring-loaded needle takes several cores of tissue. A clicking or tapping sound can be normal. The samples go to a pathology laboratory, where specialists examine cells and tissue structure. The result may help distinguish a non-cancerous change from cancer and may provide information used to plan treatment. The biopsy itself does not remove every abnormal area, and an imaging finding can still need follow-up even when the sample is reassuring.

Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, allergies, pregnancy, and any infection near the biopsy site. Follow the clinic's instructions about medicines and eating before arrival. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the area. Afterward, keep the dressing clean and follow instructions about bathing and activity. Mild soreness, bruising, or a small amount of swelling can occur. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may ease discomfort; do not press directly on the wound. Arrange transport if the clinic advises it, especially if medication has been used to relax you.

Contact the biopsy team promptly if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, the swelling is rapidly increasing, or the site becomes increasingly red, hot, or painful. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, fainting, severe weakness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Ask when the pathology report is expected and how it will be explained; a result may require comparison with scans or another sample. Ask which area will be sampled, how many cores are planned, whether you should change any medicine, when normal activity can resume, and who will contact you with the pathology result.
