What should you know about sonogram for abdominal pain?

An abdominal sonogram uses sound waves to create moving images of organs and nearby structures. It can assess the gallbladder, liver, kidneys, bile ducts, major blood vessels, and parts of the abdomen. It may help identify Gallstones, fluid, swelling, or changes in an organ. Gas in the bowel and deeper structures can limit the view, so a normal scan does not explain every type of pain. Conditions such as Acid Reflux, Coeliac Disease, Crohn's Disease, or Gastroenteritis may need other tests because they do not always appear on ultrasound.

Follow the imaging service's instructions because preparation varies with the organs being examined. You may be asked to avoid food for a period and arrive with a comfortably full bladder. Wear clothing that allows access to the abdomen, and tell the team about pregnancy, recent surgery, or severe tenderness. During the scan, gel is placed on the skin and a probe is moved across the abdomen; pressure can feel uncomfortable over a painful area. Ask when and how the result will be explained.

Do not wait for a planned scan if pain is sudden or severe, the abdomen is hard or very tender, or you have repeated vomiting, fainting, black or bloody stool, yellow skin, fever with worsening pain, or trouble breathing. Pain after an injury, pain with pregnancy, or inability to pass urine or stool also needs prompt assessment. Diverticular Disease, Food Poisoning, Gastritis, and other conditions can require different tests or treatment depending on the full pattern of symptoms.

Ask which organ or diagnosis the sonogram is intended to assess, how to prepare, and what happens if the images do not explain the pain. Mention the exact location, timing, triggers, bowel or urine changes, fever, vomiting, and any weight change.
