Sono photodynamic therapy

Photodynamic therapy generally involves applying or giving a photosensitising medicine, allowing it to act in the target tissue, and then exposing that area to a specific light source. The activated medicine produces a local chemical effect that can damage selected abnormal cells. The exact medicine, light, timing, and treatment area vary by diagnosis.

It may be considered for some superficial sun-damaged changes and selected skin cancers, including situations involving basal cell carcinoma. It is not suitable for every lesion, depth, skin type, medicine, or medical history, so diagnosis comes before treatment choice.

Tell the treating clinician about medicines, allergies, pregnancy, liver problems, light sensitivity, and previous reactions to treatment. Follow instructions about washing, shaving, creams, and sun or bright-light avoidance. During treatment, warmth, stinging, or discomfort can occur, followed by redness, crusting, or peeling as the area heals.

Protect treated skin from the exposure advised by your team and do not pick crusts. Use only recommended cleansers, dressings, and pain relief. Keep every follow-up appointment so the response and any remaining lesion can be checked.

Contact the treatment team for severe or escalating pain, marked swelling, blistering beyond the treated area, pus, fever, or a wound that is not healing as expected. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a widespread allergic reaction.

Ask for review if a treated patch remains, returns, bleeds, or changes. A clinician may recommend another treatment or a biopsy rather than repeating light treatment automatically.
