Soma Care TENS unit: what to know

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Adhesive pads deliver small electrical impulses through the skin, usually creating a tingling sensation. The intensity should feel noticeable but comfortable, never sharply painful. Relief varies between people and may fade after the device is switched off. TENS can be one part of a wider plan that may include movement, physiotherapy, sleep support, or treatment for the source of pain. The device should not be used to mask new unexplained symptoms without assessment.

Follow the device instructions and place pads on intact skin around, rather than directly over, the painful area. Check the pads and skin before and after use, keep the unit dry, and stop if burning, worsening pain, dizziness, or a strong uncomfortable sensation occurs. Do not place pads across the front of the neck, over the eyes, or across the chest. Ask a clinician before use if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, epilepsy, broken skin, or are pregnant. Do not use TENS while driving, sleeping, bathing, or operating machinery.

Seek medical help for pain with new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, unexplained weight change, major injury, chest pain, or a cold and discoloured limb. Arrange a review if pain persists, repeatedly returns, or needs increasing stimulation to feel manageable. A clinician can check the diagnosis and adjust the wider treatment plan.
