What should you know about solid fibroadenoma?

Fibroadenomas often feel smooth, firm, and mobile under the skin. They can occur in one breast or both, and their size or tenderness may change with hormonal shifts. The word solid describes the tissue seen on an examination or scan; it does not by itself establish the diagnosis.

A clinician may use a breast examination and an ultrasound to assess the lump. Depending on its appearance, your age, symptoms, and whether it changes, a biopsy may be advised so a pathologist can identify the tissue. A new lump deserves assessment even when fibroadenoma is suspected.

Arrange a breast assessment for a new, persistent, or changing lump. Take note of when you first noticed it, whether it varies with your menstrual cycle, and whether there is pain, nipple discharge, or skin change. Wear a supportive bra if movement makes the area uncomfortable.

After assessment, some fibroadenomas can be watched with follow-up examinations or imaging. Removal may be discussed if the lump grows, causes discomfort, remains uncertain after testing, or creates significant concern.
