Short answer

Sole itching at night can be caused by dry or irritated skin, eczema, psoriasis, a yeast infection, scabies, or hives; the pattern and any visible changes help guide assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common clues
Dryness, scaling, redness, cracks, peeling, bumps, or itch elsewhere
Helpful first step
Use gentle cleansing, moisturise, and keep feet cool and dry
Assessment trigger
Persistent, recurrent, sleep-disrupting, or worsening itch

What the pattern may mean

Dry, tight, flaky skin may point towards a damaged skin barrier, especially after hot showers, frequent washing, or dry indoor air. Redness, scaling, cracking, or burning can occur with eczema or contact irritation from footwear, socks, detergents, or products applied to the feet.

A yeast infection may cause itch with peeling or moist-looking skin, often between the toes, although the sole can also be involved. Thickened, sharply bordered, or repeatedly scaly areas can occur with psoriasis. Itch that is intense at night and affects household contacts raises the possibility of scabies; small bumps or burrows may be present elsewhere too. Hives tend to cause raised, itchy areas that come and go.

What you can do now

Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat the feet dry rather than rubbing. Apply a plain moisturising cream or ointment while the skin is still slightly damp, and change out of sweaty socks. Keep footwear dry and avoid scratching, new foot products, and fragranced laundry products until the cause is clearer.

Do not share towels, socks, or shoes if an infection or scabies is possible. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment when there is scaling, a spreading rash, broken skin, or persistent night-time itch; the right treatment depends on the cause.

When to seek medical care

Arrange a clinical assessment if the itching persists, keeps returning, interrupts sleep, or comes with a rash, cracks, swelling, pain, discharge, or signs of infection. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening redness, warmth, marked swelling, fever, or difficulty walking. Get urgent help if itching occurs with facial or throat swelling, wheezing, or trouble breathing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which findings best distinguish eczema, contact irritation, fungal infection, psoriasis, and scabies; whether any medicine or product could be contributing; and how to protect the skin while treatment is assessed. Mention when the itching began, whether both soles are affected, and whether anyone else at home is itchy.

Questions people ask

Why does sole itching feel worse at night?

Night-time quiet can make itch more noticeable, while warmth, sweating, dry skin, or bedding contact may also aggravate an underlying skin problem.

Should I scratch itchy soles?

Try not to scratch because broken skin can worsen inflammation and allow infection. Cool compresses, short nails, moisturiser, and a cause-specific treatment plan are safer options.

When should night-time sole itching be checked?

Arrange an assessment when it persists, returns, disrupts sleep, or appears with a rash, cracks, swelling, pain, discharge, or itch affecting other people at home.
