Soft tissue sarcoma in the shoulder: what to know

A sarcoma in the shoulder region may begin in muscle, fat or fibrous tissue. It can appear as a swelling or cause aching, stiffness, weakness, numbness or reduced arm movement when it affects nearby structures. These symptoms can have many causes, so they do not establish a diagnosis.

Examination and imaging help map the mass and its relationship with the shoulder blade, upper arm, joint, nerves and blood vessels. A biopsy identifies the tumour type and helps guide treatment.

Arrange assessment for a persistent or enlarging shoulder lump, or for unexplained symptoms that limit arm use. Record changes in size, pain, strength, sensation and range of movement. Do not massage a suspected mass or begin exercises that worsen symptoms before assessment.

The team may discuss tumour removal surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or a combination. Treatment planning aims to address the tumour while considering shoulder function, wound healing, rehabilitation and comfort.

Seek prompt review if a shoulder mass grows, becomes fixed or painful, or causes increasing weakness or numbness. Urgent care is appropriate for sudden loss of arm function, severe swelling, heavy bleeding, chest pain or difficulty breathing.

Ask which scan and biopsy are needed, whether important nerves or vessels are close to the mass, and how treatment may affect arm movement. Discuss rehabilitation, pain control, wound care and the signs that should lead to an earlier review.
