What should you know about soft kidney stones?

People may use soft to describe a stone that is small, crumbly, newly noticed or expected to pass more easily. Clinicians usually focus on the stone's composition, size, location and whether it blocks urine flow. Dehydration can make urine concentrated and encourage crystals. Symptoms can include waves of flank or abdominal pain, painful urination, blood in urine, nausea or difficulty passing urine. These symptoms can also have other causes, so the word soft cannot confirm what is happening.

Arrange a GP consultation if you have suspected stone symptoms or a previous stone. Drink regularly unless your clinician has advised fluid restriction, and do not force large amounts while in severe pain or vomiting. Follow prescribed pain or nausea treatment exactly as directed. A clinician may use urine testing, blood tests or an abdominal ultrasound to assess the urinary tract. If a stone is passed, ask whether it should be saved for analysis.

Get urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, have fever or chills, severe unrelenting pain, repeated vomiting, faintness or significant blood in urine. Infection behind a blockage can become serious. Seek review for recurring flank pain, painful urination or unexplained abdominal pain, even when the pain briefly settles.

Ask whether imaging is needed, where the suspected stone is, whether urine flow is blocked, and which warning symptoms should prompt urgent care. Ask how to prevent another stone, whether your fluid intake needs adjustment, and whether stone analysis or follow-up testing would help.
