Smith and Nephew shoulder arthroscopy instruments: what to know

A shoulder arthroscopy set may include an arthroscope, fluid-management equipment, graspers, shavers, punches, probes, cautery devices, and instruments for placing sutures or anchors. The arthroscope sends a camera view to a monitor so the surgeon can assess cartilage, the labrum, rotator cuff tendons, and the joint lining. Different tools are selected according to the finding and the planned repair; a brand name does not by itself determine whether surgery is suitable.

The same manufacturer may supply several designs and sizes. Your surgeon should explain which device is planned, whether an alternative is available, and how the instrument supports the specific procedure.

Ask for the procedure name, the purpose of each implant or disposable instrument, and whether tissue will be repaired or removed. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, previous shoulder operations, and any concerns about positioning or anaesthesia. Read the aftercare plan before surgery, including sling use, wound care, exercises, driving restrictions, and when physiotherapy begins. Recovery depends more on the shoulder problem and repair than on the instrument brand.

After arthroscopy, contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, spreading warmth, drainage, fever, worsening pain, new numbness, or a hand that becomes unusually pale or cold. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or sudden weakness. Before treatment, urgent assessment is appropriate after a major injury with a visibly deformed shoulder or loss of circulation.
