What should you know about smart otoscope?

The device is an otoscope with a small camera, light and digital display. It may help a trained user view the outer ear, ear canal, wax and parts of the eardrum. Images can support a remote or in-person discussion, especially when symptoms change over time.

A picture alone cannot reliably distinguish every cause of ear pain, blocked hearing, discharge or dizziness. Wax, a narrow canal, movement, hair or poor lighting can obscure the view. The device also cannot test hearing, measure middle-ear pressure or replace a full examination.

Use the device only as directed and keep the tip clean. Do not push it into the canal, use it after an ear injury, or try to remove wax or a foreign object with it. Stop if the examination causes pain, bleeding or marked discomfort.

Record the symptom, which ear is affected and when it began. Share clear images with a clinician rather than relying on an app label. A GP consultation can help decide whether you need treatment, a hearing assessment or referral. Children may need a child health consultation because they can find ear examination difficult.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or worsening ear pain, new hearing loss, fluid or blood from the ear, fever with significant illness, swelling behind the ear, a sudden change in balance, or an object stuck in the canal. Urgent help is appropriate for facial weakness, severe dizziness, confusion or a serious head injury.

Do not delay care while collecting images. A normal-looking image does not rule out a problem deeper in the ear or a condition that needs a hearing or neurological assessment.

Ask: What can you see on the image? Could wax or infection explain these symptoms? Do I need a hearing test or another examination? Is it safe to use this device again, and what changes should prompt review?
