Small White Dots Under the Skin

A smooth, firm, pale dot may reflect trapped keratin or another superficial cyst. A tender, warm lump that becomes red can reflect inflammation or an infected collection such as a boil. A spot that repeatedly bleeds, crusts, fails to heal, or changes in appearance requires a clinician’s review because some skin cancers can resemble a small persistent bump. Location, firmness, mobility, tenderness, duration, and whether the surface is intact all help with assessment. A symptom alone does not establish its cause.

Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly press the area. Wash gently, protect it from friction, and take a clear photograph so you can notice changes in shape, colour, or size. Avoid applying leftover antibiotics, steroid creams, or wart products without advice. If the area is inflamed, a clinician can decide whether observation, drainage, a skin test, or a targeted treatment is appropriate. Steroid injection into the skin is reserved for selected lesions and is not a general remedy for every white dot.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for a dot that persists, enlarges, changes colour or border, bleeds, crusts, ulcerates, or becomes repeatedly irritated. Seek prompt care for severe tenderness, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or facial swelling. Urgent review is needed for rapidly progressive swelling, especially near the eye, or symptoms affecting vision or breathing.

Ask what features point toward a cyst, boil, or another lesion; whether the surface should be photographed or biopsied; and which changes should prompt earlier review. Ask before using any cream or considering an injection.
