Small ringworm on the face: what to know

Facial ringworm may begin as a small itchy or scaly area and develop a clearer centre with a more noticeable edge. It can be round, but shape alone does not confirm the diagnosis. Eczema, contact dermatitis, and other facial rashes can mimic it. Fungal infection can spread through close skin contact or shared towels, cosmetics, and grooming items. A clinician may examine the border and take a skin sample when the appearance is uncertain or treatment has not helped.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels, pillowcases, makeup, brushes, or razors; wash items that touch the affected skin. Avoid steroid cream alone because it can alter the appearance and allow a fungal rash to continue. A clinician may recommend a topical antifungal treatment for a limited facial infection, with instructions about application and duration. Do not apply products near the eyes unless specifically directed.

Arrange medical assessment if the patch is near the eye, spreads quickly, becomes painful, produces pus, or affects the eyebrows or eyelashes. Seek earlier advice for a child, reduced immunity, extensive involvement, or failure to improve with prescribed treatment. Urgent care is needed for eye pain, vision change, marked facial swelling, or fever. A clinician can decide whether topical or oral antifungal treatment is appropriate.
