Small red pus-filled bumps on the arms: what to know

Folliculitis can cause small red bumps with a white or yellow centre when a hair follicle becomes inflamed. Sweat, friction, shaving, and occlusive products can contribute. Keratosis pilaris usually causes rough follicular bumps rather than true pus-filled spots, although irritation can make the area look redder. The number of bumps, their tenderness, and whether redness is spreading help a clinician distinguish these patterns. Avoid assuming that every pustule has the same cause.

Do not squeeze or puncture the bumps, since this can push inflammation deeper and spread germs to nearby follicles. Wash gently, pat dry, and wear loose, breathable sleeves. Stop shaving over the area until it settles, avoid shared towels or razors, and change out of sweaty clothing. A clinician may recommend a targeted treatment after examining the rash; use prescribed products exactly as directed and stop if significant irritation develops.

Get medical advice if pus-filled bumps are multiplying, recurring, very painful, forming larger lumps, or leaving open sores. Seek prompt care if redness becomes warm and rapidly expands, swelling is marked, red streaks appear, or you develop fever or feel unwell. These features can indicate an infection needing treatment beyond home skin care. Review is also sensible when the rash persists despite removing friction and other irritants.

Ask whether the bumps are folliculitis or another problem, whether a recent shave or product could be involved, and how to prevent recurrence without irritating the surrounding skin.
