What should you know about a small rash on your arm?

A patch that itches after contact with a new soap, plant, metal, adhesive, or fabric may fit Contact Dermatitis. Dry, itchy, recurring patches can occur with Atopic Dermatitis, while rough, sharply defined scaling may fit Psoriasis. Heat and trapped sweat can produce Heat Rash. A ring-shaped, expanding, scaly patch may suggest Ringworm, and intense night itching with similar spots in close contacts raises concern for Scabies. A rash appearing after a new medicine needs prompt clinical advice because Drug Rash can sometimes become serious.

Take a clear photo and note when it began, whether it is spreading, and anything that touched the area. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pause newly introduced products, avoid scratching, and use a plain fragrance-free moisturiser if the skin is dry. Keep the area cool and do not share towels or clothing if an infection is possible. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment after seeing the rash, especially if it is scaly, painful, oozing, or recurring.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, faintness, widespread blistering, skin peeling, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Arrange prompt medical assessment if the rash is rapidly spreading, hot and painful, draining pus, accompanied by fever, or follows a new medicine. Book a routine review if it persists, repeatedly returns, or does not improve after removing a suspected irritant.

Ask whether the appearance suggests contact irritation, eczema, fungal infection, or another cause; whether any medicine or product should be stopped; and what changes would require urgent review.
