What should you know about a small non-calcified lung nodule?

A nodule is a small rounded area in the lung. Non-calcified means the scan does not show a particular calcium pattern; it does not by itself identify the cause. Infection, inflammation, scar tissue, and cancer can all be considered. The radiologist looks at size, edges, location, appearance, and whether earlier images show change.

The clinician also considers age, smoking or vaping history, previous cancer, immune health, symptoms, and exposure history. Many nodules cause no symptoms and are found while imaging for another reason. A nodule is not the same as a confirmed tumour.

Keep the scan report and any earlier chest images available. Ask why the nodule was found, whether comparison with older images is possible, and what follow-up plan fits its appearance and your health history. A repeat CT scan may show whether it is stable or changing. Some nodules need observation; others may need a biopsy or specialist review.

Do not miss scheduled imaging, because change over time can help guide the decision. Tell the clinician about new respiratory symptoms and any previous chest investigations.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing up a significant amount of blood, fainting, or blue lips. Contact your clinician promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, persistent cough, fever, or blood-streaked sputum. These symptoms require assessment regardless of what caused the nodule.

How was the nodule described on the scan? Can older images be compared? What follow-up interval is appropriate for me? What change would lead to a biopsy or another scan? Should I see a lung specialist, and how should I report new symptoms?
