What should you know about small movable lump under skin?

A lump that shifts slightly beneath the fingers may arise in the skin, fatty tissue, or a nearby structure. A cyst can feel smooth and rounded; an inflamed boil is more likely to be tender, warm, or red. Some lumps are soft, while others are firmer and attached more deeply. Movement does not identify the cause by itself, and a clinician may need to inspect the surface, feel the lump, or arrange imaging.

Do not repeatedly squeeze, massage, or pierce the lump. Record where it is, how long it has been present, whether it is growing, and whether the skin above it has changed. Arrange a routine assessment for a persistent or unexplained lump. Treatment depends on the cause: an inflamed lesion may need medical care, while a bothersome cyst or other growth may be discussed for removal. Steroid injection into the skin is used only for selected inflammatory lesions after diagnosis.

Seek prompt medical advice if the lump grows quickly, becomes hard or fixed, turns red or hot, drains, ulcerates, bleeds, or causes fever or worsening pain. A sore that does not heal over the lump also deserves review. Urgent assessment is sensible when redness is spreading or you feel unwell, because infection may need treatment.
