What should you know about small lump in thigh under skin?

A tender red lump that develops quickly, feels warm, or contains pus can occur with boils. A deeper, softer lump that moves slightly may have a different origin from a firm lesion fixed to the skin. Location near hair follicles, recent shaving, friction, sweating, or an injury can provide useful context. Basal cell carcinoma usually appears on sun-exposed skin, but any changing, bleeding, crusting, or non-healing lesion deserves an examination rather than self-diagnosis. Most skin lumps need their texture and boundaries assessed in person.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly massage the lump. Keep the area clean, reduce rubbing from tight clothing, and use a warm, clean compress if it is mildly tender. Note its size, colour, pain, mobility, and whether the skin opens or drains. A clinician can decide whether observation, drainage, removal, or a treatment such as an intralesional steroid injection is appropriate for a particular inflammatory lesion.

Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, severe pain, pus with fever, red streaking, or difficulty walking. Book an assessment if the lump persists, enlarges, becomes hard or fixed, repeatedly returns, bleeds, crusts, or changes its surface. A clinician may need to examine it even when it causes little discomfort.

Ask what tissue the lump seems to involve, whether its depth or mobility is concerning, and whether it needs imaging, sampling, drainage, or removal. Tell the clinician when it appeared and mention friction, shaving, injury, drainage, fever, and previous similar lumps.
