Small Itchy Dots on the Skin

Dots that follow a new soap, detergent, cosmetic, plant, or fabric may reflect contact dermatitis. Dry, cracked skin can produce an eczema pattern, while raised patches that come and go fit hives. Intense itch at night, burrows, or similar symptoms in close contacts raises concern for scabies. A clinician may also consider psoriasis, lichen planus, asteatotic eczema, or a skin yeast infection after checking colour, scale, borders, and the areas involved.

Stop newly introduced fragranced products and use a bland moisturiser frequently. Keep nails short, use cool compresses, and choose loose breathable clothing. Avoid scratching, which can break the skin and invite infection. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or scabies medicines blindly: the wrong product can mask the pattern or irritate it further. Photograph changes and note triggers, timing, and affected areas.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing trouble, dizziness, blistering, skin peeling, or a rapidly spreading rash. Arrange prompt assessment if the skin is painful, hot, oozing, or accompanied by fever. Book a dermatology visit when the itch persists, repeatedly returns, affects sleep, or follows a new medicine.

Ask which features favour eczema, hives, contact dermatitis, or scabies, whether household members need assessment, and which topical product is appropriate for the exact rash.
