Small hard lump under skin: what should you know?

A superficial lump may be linked to a blocked pore, cyst-like structure, irritated follicle, or boil. These can be tender or attached to a patch of red skin. A deeper, mobile lump may be fatty or related to local inflammation, while a firm fixed area needs a clinician's attention. Basal cell carcinoma usually affects sun-exposed skin and may look like a persistent shiny, scaly, crusted, or bleeding spot rather than a simple hidden lump, but only an examination can sort these possibilities.

Compare the lump with the surrounding skin without repeatedly handling it. Note whether it is painful, warm, mobile, itchy, draining, or changing in outline.

Leave the lump alone and avoid needles, squeezing, or unlicensed creams. Wash gently and protect irritated skin from friction. Photograph it beside a familiar object for scale, and write down its location and any recent injury, shaving, bite, injection, or infection. Book a routine appointment when it does not settle, keeps returning, or causes concern. The clinician may use touch and visual inspection to decide whether monitoring, medication, drainage, or another evaluation is appropriate.

Seek prompt care for rapid enlargement, increasing heat or pain, pus, spreading redness, or fever. Arrange timely assessment for a hard fixed lump, skin breakdown, repeated bleeding, or a lesion that does not heal. Urgent help is needed if swelling affects breathing, swallowing, or movement, or if you feel acutely unwell.

Ask what tissue the lump seems to involve, which changes would make it urgent, and when it should be rechecked. Ask whether your recent illness, trauma, shaving, or medication could explain it, and whether a steroid injection into the skin has any role for the diagnosed problem.
