Small hard lump under chin: what should you know?

A lump close to the surface may have a visible pore, redness, tenderness, or a central spot. A deeper lump can reflect a lymph node responding to a recent throat, mouth, tooth, or skin infection. A boil often becomes sore, warm, and increasingly red as inflammation builds. Less commonly, a persistent or changing skin growth needs assessment; a basal cell carcinoma can appear as a firm, shiny, scaly, or bleeding spot, although appearance alone cannot diagnose it.

Notice whether it moves slightly under the skin, whether the skin over it changes, and whether it is growing. Do not assume that a lump itself identifies its cause.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly press the area, because this can worsen inflammation and introduce infection. Keep the skin clean, take a clear photograph, and record when you first noticed the lump. A warm, damp cloth may soothe a tender superficial bump. Arrange a routine examination if it persists, returns, enlarges, or remains difficult to classify. A clinician may inspect the skin and nearby mouth and throat, then decide whether observation, treatment, or further testing is appropriate.

Seek prompt medical care if the lump grows quickly, becomes very painful or hot, drains pus, or redness spreads. Get urgent help for trouble swallowing or breathing, marked swelling under the tongue or jaw, fever with worsening swelling, or feeling seriously unwell. A lump that is hard and fixed, lasts without improvement, or is associated with unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or persistent voice or throat symptoms deserves timely assessment.

Ask whether the lump seems to arise from the skin or deeper tissue, what features make infection more or less likely, and how long it is reasonable to observe. You can also ask whether a dental or throat source should be checked and whether a skin treatment such as a steroid injection is suitable for the suspected cause.
