What should you know about small fat lumps under skin?

A soft, mobile lump may be a benign fatty growth or a cyst, while a tender, warm lump can occur with inflammation or an infected blocked follicle. A lump can also feel different when it lies deeper in the tissue. The word fat describes how it feels; it does not establish what it is. A clinician may examine its size, borders, depth, skin changes and mobility before deciding whether monitoring or further assessment is appropriate.

Do not squeeze, puncture or repeatedly massage the area. Note when you first noticed it, whether it moves over the deeper tissue, and whether its size, colour, firmness or tenderness changes. Take a dated photograph if the skin looks different. Arrange a routine dermatology or primary-care visit if the lump persists, enlarges, becomes uncomfortable, or worries you. Treatment depends on the diagnosis; an intralesional steroid injection may help selected inflammatory lesions, but it is not a general treatment for every lump.

Seek prompt medical advice for a lump that grows quickly, becomes fixed, bleeds, ulcerates, develops marked redness or warmth, or causes significant pain. Seek urgent care if fever, spreading redness, severe swelling, or feeling acutely unwell accompanies it. These features do not identify one diagnosis by themselves, but they make an in-person assessment more time-sensitive.

Ask what features make the lump seem superficial or deeper, whether it needs imaging or removal, what changes should trigger an earlier review, and which treatments fit the suspected cause. Mention any recent injury, injection, skin infection, or family history of unusual growths.
