What should you know about a small carbuncle?

A carbuncle forms when infection affects several nearby hair follicles and creates a deeper, painful area under the skin. It may look like a group of red bumps with several points of drainage. The surrounding skin can feel warm, swollen, and tender, and nearby lymph nodes may become sore.

Carbuncles can occur on the neck, back, thighs, or other hair-bearing areas. The infection can pass to other people through drainage, towels, or shared razors. Diabetes, immune problems, or repeated boils can make assessment more important.

Use a clean warm compress for short periods, keep the area covered with a fresh dressing, and wash your hands after touching it. Do not squeeze, lance, or shave across the lump; pressure can push infection deeper or spread it. Keep towels, bedding, and clothing separate until the area has healed.

A clinician may prescribe antibiotics for skin infection when the surrounding infection or your health history calls for them. If pus is trapped, abscess drainage may be needed so it can leave safely. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and attend any recommended review.

Arrange same-day assessment if the carbuncle is rapidly enlarging, very painful, draining heavily, or surrounded by spreading redness. Seek urgent care for fever, chills, weakness, confusion, red streaks, or difficulty moving the nearby joint. Get prompt advice if it is on the face or near the eye, or if you have diabetes or reduced immunity.

Ask whether the lump needs drainage, whether antibiotics are appropriate, and how to dress it. Ask how to reduce transmission at home, whether a sample is needed if it recurs, and which symptoms mean the infection is worsening.
