Small Blue Lump Under the Skin: What to Know

A small blue lump under the skin may reflect a visible blood vessel, bruise, cyst, or inflamed lesion, and its features guide assessment. Note whether it is soft or firm, movable or fixed, painful or painless, and whether the colour changes with pressure or position. A new or changing lump should not be diagnosed from a photograph alone.

Blue colour can occur when blood is close to the surface, pooled after minor injury, or within a vein. A tender, warm lump may be inflamed; a deeper, stable lump may have a different cause. Most skin lumps need their texture and behaviour examined rather than judged by colour. A sore lump with redness or drainage may fit a boil, while a persistent changing lesion requires a clinician to rule out other problems.

Do not squeeze, puncture, massage, or try to drain the lump. Record when it appeared, any injury or injection near it, and whether it grows or changes colour. Use a cool compress for a recent minor bruise if comfortable, and avoid repeated pressure over the area. Arrange a routine dermatology or primary-care assessment for a lump that persists or causes concern.

Seek prompt care if the lump enlarges, becomes very painful or hot, drains, or is surrounded by spreading redness. Urgent assessment is needed for fever, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, numbness, or a blue area that appears suddenly with circulation concerns. A firm, fixed, bleeding, crusting, or non-healing lesion should be examined without delay.
