What should you know about a slightly sprained wrist?

Short answer
A slightly sprained wrist usually improves with protection, comfortable movement, and gradual return to use after a clinician has checked for a fracture.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a mild wrist sprain means
A sprain affects the strong bands of tissue that connect wrist bones. A small stretch or partial injury may cause tenderness, swelling, bruising, or pain when gripping and turning the hand. Wrist pain can also come from a small fracture, so the way the injury happened and the examination matter. Symptoms may be felt on the thumb side, little-finger side, or across the back of the wrist.
What to do at home
Rest from lifting, pushing, sport, and movements that increase pain. Keep the wrist supported in a comfortable neutral position; a splint may help for short periods, especially during activities. Cold wrapped in cloth can ease swelling. Elevate the hand when it is puffy, and move the fingers and elbow regularly. As pain settles, begin gentle wrist movement without forcing the joint, then rebuild grip and daily tasks gradually. Physiotherapy can help if stiffness, weakness, or repeated sprains remain.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment promptly after a fall or blow if pain is strong, swelling is increasing, the wrist looks different, or you cannot grip or move it normally. Seek urgent help for numbness, tingling, unusual coldness, pale or blue fingers, or an open wound. Persistent pain or tenderness over one wrist bone deserves review even when swelling is mild, because some fractures are not obvious at first.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be a fracture rather than a sprain? Should I use a splint, and for which activities? Which movements are safe now, and when should I start strengthening? What symptoms would mean I need a follow-up examination?

Questions people ask
Can a slightly sprained wrist heal without surgery?
Many mild sprains are managed without surgery, but an examination is useful to exclude a fracture or more significant ligament injury.
Should I keep my wrist completely still?
Short periods of support can be useful, but prolonged complete stillness may increase stiffness. Follow the movement plan given for your injury.
