What should you know about slight fever?

Short answer
A slight fever is a mild rise in body temperature, often linked to infection, and should be judged alongside your other symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Breathing trouble, confusion or dehydration
What it may indicate
Temperature changes naturally during the day and can be affected by activity, warm surroundings and how it was measured. A fever is a body response, not a diagnosis. Viral illnesses such as the Common Cold and COVID-19 commonly present with fever; Acute Bronchitis can present with fever and cough. Skin redness and tenderness may occur with Cellulitis, while a child with a barking cough may have Croup.
A slight fever does not by itself show which condition is present. Record the reading, method, time and associated symptoms so the pattern is clear.
What to do at home
Rest, drink fluids regularly and wear light clothing while avoiding overheating. Recheck with the same thermometer and method if you feel worse. Use fever medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician, taking account of age, pregnancy, allergies and other medicines. Avoid giving children medicines intended for adults.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if the fever persists, keeps returning, or occurs with breathing difficulty, dehydration, confusion, a stiff neck, severe pain, a widespread rash or marked drowsiness. A baby or medically vulnerable person with fever deserves prompt advice. Seek emergency help for severe breathing trouble, seizure, collapse or inability to wake.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what temperature pattern matters, whether your symptoms fit a viral illness, how much fluid to take, and which medicine is suitable for your age and health conditions.
