Slight brown discharge after menopause may be old blood, irritation, or another vaginal or uterine change, so arrange a healthcare assessment. Brown colour often happens when a small amount of blood takes longer to leave the body. The colour or small amount does not show the cause by itself.

After menopause, vaginal tissues can become thinner and drier. Friction from sex, an examination, or wiping may then cause light spotting. Inflammation, an infection, a cervical polyp, or changes in the lining of the womb can also cause brown discharge. Get prompt advice as well if the discharge has a strong unpleasant smell, comes with fever, or follows a recent procedure. These features can point to a need for quicker evaluation.
