What should you know about sleep apnea and depression?

How the structures involved in Depression differ from normal

Short answer

Sleep apnea and depression can occur together, and untreated breathing interruptions may worsen sleep, energy, concentration, and mood without proving which condition came first.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Overlap
Sleep apnea and depression can both affect sleep, energy, concentration, and mood.
Safety
Severe sleepiness and thoughts of self-harm require urgent help.

Why the symptoms overlap

Sleep apnea involves repeated narrowing or closure of the upper airway during sleep, which can cause brief awakenings and reduced restorative sleep. Snoring, gasping, dry mouth, morning headache, daytime sleepiness, fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating may follow. Depression can also present with low mood, loss of interest, changes in sleep or appetite, reduced energy, and slowed thinking. Because these patterns overlap, mood symptoms should not be attributed to poor sleep alone, and low mood should not be dismissed as a breathing problem. Insomnia may coexist with sleep apnea and can make the picture harder to recognise.

How to get assessed

Tell a clinician about snoring, witnessed pauses, choking awakenings, morning symptoms, mood changes, and any medicines or alcohol that affect sleep. A sleep assessment may include questions, examination, and an overnight breathing test. Depression assessment should cover mood, interest, functioning, safety, and other medical explanations for fatigue. If sleep apnea is confirmed, use the recommended treatment consistently and discuss mask comfort or other barriers rather than stopping alone. Keep a regular sleep schedule, avoid driving when sleepy, and ask for support with activity, therapy, or medication when depression is suspected.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help if depression brings thoughts of suicide, self-harm, or inability to stay safe. Get prompt medical advice for severe daytime sleepiness, falling asleep while driving, chest pain, fainting, or breathing difficulty while awake. Arrange an appointment for persistent low mood, loss of interest, loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, morning headaches, or ongoing fatigue; these symptoms deserve assessment even when they seem connected to stress.

Questions for your doctor

Could sleep apnea explain my snoring, awakenings, or daytime sleepiness? Do I need a sleep study? How will you assess depression separately? Could my medicines or alcohol affect breathing or mood? What treatment should I try first, and how will we monitor mood and alertness?

Questions people ask

Can sleep apnea cause depression?

Sleep apnea can contribute to poor sleep, fatigue, and mood changes, but depression needs its own clinical assessment.

Can depression hide sleep apnea?

Yes. Fatigue, sleep changes, and concentration problems may be labelled as depression while nighttime breathing disruption remains unrecognised.
