What should you know about skipping shin splints?

Short answer

Skipping shin splints usually reflect repeated impact that irritates tissues along the shin, so reduce provoking exercise and rebuild gradually.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Common trigger
Repeated jumping or a sudden training increase

Stop the activity that reproduces pain

What shin splints can mean

Shin splints, also called medial tibial stress syndrome, often cause aching or tenderness along the inner border of the shin after jumping, running, or a sudden increase in training. Skipping combines repeated landings with quick calf and foot movement. Flat feet or a change in footwear can alter how force travels through the lower leg. Shin pain that is sharply focused in one small spot, appears at rest, or keeps worsening deserves an assessment because other bone or soft-tissue problems can resemble shin splints.

What you can do now

Pause skipping and other impact exercise until ordinary walking is comfortable. Choose a lower-impact activity that does not reproduce symptoms, and use comfortable supportive footwear. When symptoms settle, restart with short, easy sessions on a forgiving surface, leaving recovery time between sessions. Increase one training factor at a time rather than returning to your previous volume immediately. A physiotherapist can review calf strength, ankle movement, landing control, and training load; gait retraining may help if your movement pattern repeatedly overloads the shin. Custom orthotics may be considered when foot mechanics contribute.

When to seek care

Arrange clinical advice for pain that persists despite reducing impact, returns every time you resume skipping, or limits walking. Seek prompt assessment for marked swelling, bruising, inability to bear weight, numbness, weakness, pain at rest or at night, or tenderness over one precise area. A clinician may examine the leg and decide whether imaging or another evaluation is needed.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be shin splints or another cause of shin pain? Which activities are suitable while it settles? How should I progress back to skipping? Would foot assessment, custom orthotics, or gait retraining help?
