Virus-Related Skin Bumps: What to Know

A viral lesion may spread through contact, but similar bumps can come from blocked pores, irritated follicles, heat, trapped keratin, or inflammatory skin disease. Folliculitis often centres on hairs and may be sore; heat rash tends to occur where sweat is trapped; keratosis pilaris commonly feels rough and uniform. Milia are small keratin-filled bumps, while lichen planus can produce itchy, inflamed lesions. The location and pattern matter as much as the appearance.

Avoid picking, shaving across, or squeezing the bumps, and wash hands after touching them. Do not share towels, razors, or cosmetics until the cause is clearer. Note whether the bumps itch, hurt, ooze, blister, or appear after heat or a new product.
