Skin Tag Removal with Scissors

A clinician may use sterile scissors to snip a confirmed skin tag, but cutting one at home can cause bleeding, infection, scarring, or a missed diagnosis. Professional removal includes examination, clean technique, and advice for caring for the small wound.

A typical snip technique removes a soft tag at or near its narrow base after the area is cleaned. Local anaesthetic may be used when appropriate, and the clinician controls bleeding before applying a dressing or wound-care instructions. The removed tissue may need further assessment when the appearance is unusual. A dark, firm, broad-based, painful, ulcerated, or rapidly changing bump should not be assumed to be a routine tag.

Arrange a skin examination before deciding on removal. Household scissors, nail clippers, and razors are not sterile or designed for this purpose, and pulling the tag can tear nearby skin. Avoid tying it with thread or applying caustic liquids. After professional snip removal, wash the area only as directed, keep the dressing in place for the advised period, and avoid picking while the surface closes.

Contact the clinic if bleeding returns, pain increases, redness spreads, the area becomes warm, or discharge appears. Seek urgent care if firm pressure does not control bleeding or if you feel faint. Have the site reviewed if it does not heal, if a lump remains, or if the lesion changes after removal.
