Skin Tag on Buttocks Removal: What to Know

A skin tag is a soft, flesh-coloured growth that may hang from a narrow base or sit on a broader attachment. Friction from clothing, sitting or nearby skin can make it catch, become irritated or bleed after rubbing. A bump in this area is not automatically a skin tag, so appearance and recent change matter. A clinician may inspect it closely and ask whether it has changed, been injured or caused discomfort.

The buttocks can also develop cysts, warts, inflamed follicles and other lesions that need different care. Avoid tying thread around the growth, cutting it, or applying household chemicals; these actions can cause bleeding, infection or a confusing wound.

If removal is appropriate, a clinician may numb the skin and remove the tag by a minor procedure, freezing or heat-based treatment. The choice depends on the lesion and the surrounding skin. Keep the area clean, follow the dressing instructions and reduce rubbing while it heals. Do not pick a scab or use an unprescribed product on the wound. Ask whether the removed tissue should be examined if the diagnosis is uncertain.

Arrange an assessment if the bump grows quickly, becomes firm, changes colour, develops an uneven surface, bleeds without rubbing, or repeatedly returns after treatment. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, worsening pain or fever after removal. A sore near the anal opening, or a lesion that affects bowel movements, also deserves direct examination.
