Skin scraping test results

A positive microscopy result may show fungal elements in the collected scale, while a positive culture means the laboratory detected fungal growth. A negative result means none was detected in that sample; it does not automatically explain every rash or exclude fungus in every circumstance. Sampling an inactive area, using antifungal treatment beforehand, or collecting too little scale can make interpretation harder. Your clinician combines the report with the examination.

If the findings support fungal infection, your clinician may recommend a topical medicine or Oral Antifungal Treatment according to the location, extent, and your health history. If the result is negative or unclear, they may reassess the diagnosis, repeat sampling, or consider another explanation. Use treatment exactly as prescribed and avoid sharing towels, footwear, or personal items when advised for a suspected contagious infection. Do not self-treat a persistent rash solely from a laboratory phrase.

Contact the clinic if symptoms worsen despite treatment, the affected area becomes painful or infected-looking, or the rash reaches the eyes or mouth. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing trouble or a rapidly spreading blistering reaction to medicine.

Ask whether the report shows microscopy, culture, or both; how reliable the sample was; whether treatment changes are needed; and when the skin should be reviewed.
