Redness, itching, bumps, burning, or blisters can appear on exposed areas, although the exact pattern varies. Some reactions occur soon after sunlight; others appear later. A drug-related reaction can begin after a new prescription, an over-the-counter product, or a topical ingredient. The timing does not identify the cause by itself, so list every medicine and skincare product and show photographs taken during a flare.

Seek shade, cover the affected skin, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that does not sting. Pause newly introduced fragranced or active skincare products and use a gentle moisturiser. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without speaking with the prescriber; ask whether an alternative or a change in timing is needed. A dermatologist can decide whether topical treatment or further testing is appropriate.

Get urgent help for breathing problems, swelling of the lips or face, faintness, widespread blistering, skin peeling, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Seek prompt medical review for fever, severe pain, pus, rapidly spreading redness, or a rash that continues away from sunlight.
