What should you know about skin rash planus?

Planus is not a standard diagnosis on its own. People sometimes use it to describe a flat, patterned, or unusually shaped rash, while a clinician may be considering a condition such as psoriasis, dermatitis, an infection, or another inflammatory problem. Note whether the area is itchy, scaly, painful, moist, ring-shaped, or changing. Record where it began, whether it is spreading, and any new soap, medicine, fabric, plant, or heat exposure.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry, and apply a bland moisturiser. Avoid scratching, tight clothing, fragranced products, and any new product that touched the area. Do not use a steroid, antifungal, or medicated shampoo simply because a rash looks similar to a picture; the wrong product can obscure its pattern or irritate broken skin. Take a clear photograph in good light and arrange a dermatology assessment if it persists or returns.

Seek urgent medical help for a rash with breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread blistering, skin peeling, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, rapidly spreading redness, marked pain, pus, or a rash after starting a medicine. A persistent, recurrent, or unexplained rash also deserves a planned review.

Could the shape and scale suggest dermatitis, psoriasis, infection, or another cause? Should I stop or continue any recently started product or medicine? Would a skin scraping, swab, or other examination help? What should I use if itching interferes with sleep?
