Skin Rash From Sun: What You Should Know

The rash may be red, itchy, bumpy, or burning and can appear on exposed areas after time outdoors. Heat, sweat, friction, a new product, or a medicine that increases light sensitivity can all contribute. Sunburn usually causes tender, hot skin, while a light-triggered rash may be itchier or recur after exposure. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis or Contact Dermatitis may also flare after outdoor exposure.

Move out of direct sunlight and cool the skin with a damp, cool cloth. Wear loose, covering clothing and avoid scratching, fragranced products, and further sun until the skin settles. Use gentle cleansing and a plain moisturiser if it does not sting. Check whether a new medicine or skincare product preceded the rash, but do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice. A clinician can distinguish this pattern from Heat Rash or a Drug Rash and recommend suitable treatment.

Seek urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, widespread blistering, severe pain, confusion, or fever. Arrange a dermatology assessment if the rash is spreading, involves the eyes or mouth, shows pus, or is not improving after avoiding sun. Bring photographs taken when the rash is visible and a list of medicines, supplements, and products used on the skin.
