Skin rash after contact with a dog: what to know

Dog contact may expose skin to saliva, dander, shampoo, plants, or substances carried in the coat. It can also coincide with fleas or other bites. A ring-shaped, scaly patch that slowly enlarges can fit Ringworm, while intensely itchy spots affecting household members may need assessment for Scabies. Localized itch or redness may be Contact Dermatitis or an allergic response; Atopic Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Psoriasis, and Drug Rash are other possibilities. The rash cannot identify its cause without examining its pattern.

Wash exposed skin and hands, avoid scratching, and pause any new pet shampoo or topical product until the cause is clearer. Do not share towels, bedding, clothing, or grooming items if a contagious skin infection is possible. Photograph the rash, record when dog contact occurred, and check whether anyone else or the dog has itching or skin changes. A veterinarian can assess the dog, while a healthcare professional assesses your skin.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, dizziness, or faintness after contact. Arrange medical review for a spreading ring-like rash, pus, increasing warmth or pain, fever, eye involvement, or persistent itch. Avoid sharing medication between people and pets.
