What should you know about skin peels?

Short answer
Skin peels use a carefully selected exfoliating agent to loosen surface layers, and the expected redness, flaking, and recovery depend on the peel depth and your skin.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a skin peel changes
A peel may be used to smooth rough texture, brighten uneven tone, or soften the look of some superficial marks. The solution is chosen according to the area, skin sensitivity, current inflammation, and the concern being treated. A light peel may cause tightness and fine scaling, while a deeper treatment creates a more noticeable healing response and needs closer supervision. Results are gradual because new surface cells form during recovery. A peel cannot correct every cause of discoloration or scaling; [Peeling Skin](/symptoms/skin-peeling/) may instead reflect [Athlete's Foot](/conditions/athletes-foot/), [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/), or [Sunburn](/conditions/sunburn/).
Preparing and recovering
Tell the practitioner about eczema, cold sores, recent procedures, medicines, and products that make you sensitive. Use the recommended cleanser and moisturiser, and pause exfoliating products only as instructed. During recovery, do not scrub, pick, wax, or use hot treatments on the area. Protect it from sunlight with shade, clothing, and sunscreen. Contact the clinic if discomfort is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop marked swelling, blisters, or drainage.
When to get medical help
Urgent assessment is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, eye exposure, extensive blistering, severe pain, fever, or rapidly spreading redness. A non-healing raw area, new dark or light patches, or recurrent peeling also deserves review. A dermatologist can decide whether a peel is suitable or whether the underlying skin problem should be treated first.

Questions people ask
Will a stronger peel always give a better result?
No. Greater depth also changes recovery and risk, so the treatment should match the concern and skin condition.
Can a peel treat an active rash?
Usually it should not be applied to inflamed, infected, or sunburned skin without medical guidance.
