What should you know about skin hives from sun?

Hives are temporary raised areas caused by skin cells releasing inflammatory chemicals. Sunlight can trigger this reaction in some people, with redness, warmth and itching on exposed skin. The rash may fade after leaving the light, but recurrent episodes deserve a clinical diagnosis.

Swelling of deeper skin layers is called angioedema and may affect the lips, eyelids, tongue or throat. Itchy skin and skin rash can accompany hives, but a rash after sun may also have other causes.

Leave direct sunlight, cover exposed skin with close-weave clothing, and use shade while symptoms settle. Avoid rubbing or hot showers, and record the timing, body areas and products or medicines used before the reaction.

A clinician may recommend an oral antihistamine treatment. Do not start oral corticosteroid treatment without medical advice; the choice depends on severity, recurrence and whether deeper swelling is present.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat tightness, faintness, wheezing, or swelling of the tongue or mouth. Seek prompt review for widespread hives, repeated sun reactions, skin swelling or symptoms that do not settle after leaving the exposure.
