Short answer

Skin that feels sensitive may be reacting to irritation, dryness, inflammation, or an underlying condition, so simplify care and watch for warning signs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What sensitivity can feel like

Sensitivity can include stinging when you apply a cleanser or moisturiser, burning after heat or exercise, itching, tightness, redness, or flushing. A damaged skin barrier can allow everyday ingredients and environmental triggers to feel unusually harsh. Fragrance, exfoliating acids, retinoids, shaving, hot water, wind, and repeated rubbing are common irritants.

Sensitive skin is a symptom pattern rather than a single diagnosis. Atopic dermatitis often presents with itch and dryness; rosacea can bring flushing and burning, especially on the central face; perioral dermatitis may cause irritation and small bumps around the mouth or nose. The pattern, location, visible changes, and timing help a clinician sort these apart.

What you can do today

Pause newly introduced or strongly active products. Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a bland moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Avoid scrubs, picking, unnecessary rubbing, and very hot showers until the reaction settles. Reintroduce products one at a time only after comfort returns, and test a small area first.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review if sensitivity keeps returning, interferes with sleep, or comes with a persistent rash, scaling, swelling, or repeated flushing. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, marked facial swelling, blistering, skin peeling over a large area, fever, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the lips or tongue.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which ingredients or conditions could explain the pattern, whether you should stop a prescribed product, and what cleanser and moisturiser suit your skin. Bring a list of recent products, medicines, procedures, and the places and times symptoms appear.

Questions people ask

Can sensitive skin improve?

Often, comfort improves when irritants are removed and the skin barrier is supported, although recurring symptoms may need diagnosis and treatment.

Should you scrub flaky sensitive skin?

No. Scrubbing can add friction and worsen irritation; use gentle cleansing and moisturising instead.
