What should you know about skin always itchy?

Short answer
Skin that is always itchy deserves attention because ongoing itch can result from dryness, irritation, eczema, psoriasis, infection, scabies, or another health problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
The appearance and location of the itch help narrow the possibilities. Dry, cracked skin may point toward a weakened skin barrier; a new product may trigger contact dermatitis; thick or scaly patches can occur with psoriasis or eczema; and itching that is worse at night or affects close contacts needs assessment for scabies. Itch can also occur before a visible rash appears.
What persistent itching can mean
Persistent itching is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Common skin-related contributors include dry air, frequent hot showers, harsh cleansers, sweat, friction, and reactions to soaps, fragrances, fabrics, medicines, or cosmetics. Atopic dermatitis can bring itch with dry, inflamed skin, while asteatotic eczema often affects very dry, cracked areas. Hives tend to form raised, changing welts. A yeast infection is more likely in warm, moist folds and may cause redness or soreness. Lichen planus can produce itchy, distinct bumps or plaques.
If the itch is widespread, keeps returning without a clear skin trigger, or comes with other symptoms, a clinician may consider causes beyond the skin and decide whether an examination or tests are useful.
What you can do now
Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and a thick moisturiser soon after bathing. Reapply when the skin feels dry. Keep nails short, pat rather than rub, and use a cool compress or soft clothing when the urge to scratch is strong. Avoid starting several new creams at once; a simple routine makes it easier to identify irritation.
Make a note of when the itching began, where it occurs, whether a rash is present, what makes it worse, and any recent changes in products, medicines, travel, or household contacts. Arrange a medical assessment if these measures do not settle the problem or if the itch interferes with sleep or daily activities.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if itching occurs with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, or a rapidly spreading reaction. Prompt medical review is also appropriate for severe pain, blisters, skin peeling, pus, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or widespread itch during pregnancy.
Book a routine appointment when itching persists, repeatedly returns, spreads across the body, causes broken skin, or is accompanied by unexplained weight change, marked tiredness, night sweats, or changes in urination. These features do not identify one cause by themselves, but they help a clinician choose the right evaluation.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What features of my skin suggest a particular cause? Could a product, medicine, infection, or infestation be contributing? Which moisturiser or treatment is suitable for the affected area? Should I avoid anything while the skin heals? Do I need a skin examination, a review of my medicines, or further tests? What changes should prompt earlier review?

Questions people ask
Can dry skin cause constant itching?
Yes. Loss of moisture can weaken the skin barrier and make nerve endings more sensitive, especially with hot water, dry air, or harsh cleansers. Persistent or widespread itch still deserves assessment if it does not improve with gentle skin care.
Does itchy skin always mean eczema?
No. Eczema is one possible cause, but contact dermatitis, psoriasis, hives, infections, scabies, medicines, and non-skin conditions can also cause itching. The rash pattern, timing, and distribution help distinguish them.
